    Reading & Language Arts:

Poetry Read one or two poems aloud from
Favorite Poems Old & New daily.

Reading:  Assign a chapter (or so) of reading each day. Have
your student find one word he's not familiar with and
then you give the definition, talk about its context,
and have him tell you a sentence with the word in it.
Then have him give a verbal or short written narration
                of the chapter.

(Your 3rd grader shouldn't take more than 1/2 hr to
read the assignment.  If it is taking longer, read the
remaining portion aloud to your student.)

Phonics Skilltext D/4:  approx. 1pp a day

(Language Practice 3:  I suggest starting it in January-- good practice for standardized tests)

Spelling:  week 1:  Use this week to determine where to start your
student in Spelling Power, following the Quick
Steps found at the beginning of the book.
weeks 2-6:  follow Spelling Power's guidelines

Primary Language Lessons:  Lessons 1-15

*This book is intended for use in both 3rd & 4th grades.  In order to finish it in two school years (36weeks each), strive to complete 2.5 lessons per week:  2 lessons one week, 3 the next.  I suggest that on the weeks when only 2 lessons are done, that a previous lesson be redone or reviewed.

  Science

The Burgess Bird Book:  Read one chapter per week
(Coming next year:  Jack's Insects by Edmond Selous!)

Nature Walk/outing:  Try to do two outings per week.
On at least one of the outings, have your student  focus on one particular group of living things (i.e. mammals, insects, birds, flowers, etc)  Briefly read to yourself one or two lessons about that group in the Handbook of Nature Study and share an interesting fact concerning it with your student at some point during the outing.

Have your student record observations in the nature notebook, perhaps including one of the appropriate verses found in the Handbook.
