Renaissance History:

*This year, 3rd graders should be memorizing where all of the U.S. states are located and how to spell the state names.  After this, they should memorize all the state capitals.

*Learn def. of Renaissance and how this "rebirth" exhibited itself in the period. *What is a "Renaissance Man," give example. *What was the new understanding of space? *What was the school of Athens and who are the people in the painting?  Why is Plato pointing up and Aristotle pointing down?  *Who are the different figures in Botticelli's painting and what do they represent?

    Reading & Language Arts:

Poetry Read one or two poems aloud from
             Favorite Poems Old & New daily.

Reading:  Assign a chapter (or so) of reading each day. Have
                your student find one word he's not familiar with and
                then you give the definition, talk about its context,
                and have him tell you a sentence with the word in it.
                Then have him give a verbal or short written narration
                of the chapter.

                (Your 3rd grader shouldn't take more than 1/2 hr to
                read the assignment.  If it is taking longer, read the
                remaining portion aloud to your student.)

Phonics Skilltext D/4:  approx. 1pp a day

(Language Practice 3:  I suggest starting it in January-- good practice for standardized tests)

Spelling:  weeks 7-12: follow Spelling Power's guidelines

Primary Language Lessons:  Lessons 16-30
   
*This book is intended for use in both 3rd & 4th grades.  In order to finish it in two school years (36weeks each), strive to complete 2.5 lessons per week:  2 lessons one week, 3 the next.  I suggest that on the weeks when only 2 lessons are done, that a previous lesson be redone or reviewed.

   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
     
  Science

The Burgess Bird Book:  Read one chapter per week
    (Coming next year:  Jack's Insects by Edmond Selous!)

Nature Walk/outing:  Try to do two outings per week. 
     On at least one of the outings, have your student  focus on one particular group of living things (i.e. mammals, insects, birds, flowers, etc)  Briefly read to yourself one or two lessons about that group in the Handbook of Nature Study and share an interesting fact concerning it with your student at some point during the outing. 

    Have your student record observations in the nature notebook, perhaps including one of the appropriate verses found in the Handbook.

Geology & Crafts
