Creating Homemade Slime
I’ve found that one of the most enjoyable DIY craft activities for parents and children involves creating homemade slime. We usually gather around and embark on this creative adventure using simple ingredients like glue, baking soda, and contact lens solution. It’s a wonderful bonding activity, allowing us to explore various textures and colors while fostering imaginative play.
From my perspective, the joy on my children’s faces as they mix and mold the slime is truly priceless. It’s moments like these that make crafting together a cherished family tradition in our home.

Crafting Memory Jars
While I’m deeply engrossed in the corporate world, I cherish moments of creativity with my children. One of our favorite DIY crafts is creating “Memory Jars.”
We collect small mementos, photos, and trinkets from our travels or significant events throughout the year and place them in a decorative jar. At the end of the year, we enjoy opening the jar and reminiscing about our adventures and milestones. It’s a beautiful way to capture memories and has become a cherished tradition in our household.

Building Huts and Making Jelly
One of my favorite DIY craft activities to do with my children at home is creating imaginative huts using everyday items we find around the house. We love to get creative, using blankets, cushions, cardboard boxes, and even furniture to construct our cozy hideaways. It’s a wonderful exercise in creativity and resourcefulness, and it always leads to hours of imaginative play inside our homemade shelters.
Besides that, another activity we thoroughly enjoy is jelly-making. Over the last two to three years, my eight-year-old daughter and I have experimented with various flavors and colors, sometimes even adding fruits or candies for an extra twist. It’s not just about the end product for us; the entire process, from choosing the ingredients to waiting for the jelly to set, is a bonding experience.
These activities have not only allowed us to spend quality time together but have also nurtured my daughter’s creativity and patience.

Experimenting with Pour-Painting
My favorite DIY craft project to do with my kids is pour-painting. Basically, you get some acrylic paints, which are pretty inexpensive at Hobby Lobby or other craft stores. You squirt various colors into a cup, essentially making layers, then you pour it onto a surface.
We have a lot of plants in the house, so one of our favorite projects is to make pour-paint planter pots. However, we also do picture frames and have even done furniture. It gives a really cool look, is super easy to do, and the kids love it.

Designing Nature Collage Canvases
One of our cherished DIY crafts is creating “Nature Collage Canvases.” We start with a simple canvas, then during family walks, my kids and I gather fallen leaves, flowers, twigs, and even pebbles. Back home, we paint the canvas with colors of choice, then artfully arrange our nature finds onto it, securing them with craft glue.
It not only fosters creativity but also instills a love for nature in my kids. Each canvas becomes a vibrant memento of our outings, and it’s always heartwarming to see how their artistic perspectives evolve over time. A delightful blend of art and memories!

Personalizing Birthday Cards
Making birthday cards is one of my favorite do-it-yourself projects to do with my kids. It’s a unique and thoughtful way to mark important events.
We get markers, stickers, colored paper, and other art materials and start to think of creative ideas. It’s a great way to spark their imaginations and spend time with them while they make something special for family and friends. It’s also a great way to teach them how to enjoy giving.

Sewing a Story Quilt
One delightful DIY craft idea I relish doing with my children is the story quilt. This not only brings out their artistic skills but also enhances their storytelling and narrative abilities.
Understanding the basics of sewing, we use pieces of fabric—that could be old clothing, tablecloths, or any fabric leftovers—to narrate a story, where each square tells a piece of the tale! We sketch, paint, or embroider our part of the narrative onto each fabric square and finally sew them all together into a beautiful story quilt.
The quilt ends up not only being a cozy companion during winter, narrating a warm tale, but also serves as a creative wall décor—a tangible storybook of our combined creativity!
